Effective July 15, 2024, Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Inc. (CPL) will be implementing new colony count reporting ranges for urine culture results. The new ranges will simplify reporting and will more closely comply with guidelines recommended by the American Society of Microbiology and the Infectious Disease Society of America.

Urine cultures are laboratory tests used to detect bacteria, yeast, or other microorganisms in the urine. These cultures help identify the specific type of microorganism responsible for an infection, which is essential for determining the most effective treatment. Urine cultures are commonly used to diagnose urinary tract infections, such as bladder infections, and may also be performed post-treatment to ensure the infection-causing microorganisms have been eradicated.
